Montreal, November 14, 2014 ─ On October 29th, Fondation Émergence’s Board of Directors adopted, by majority vote, a resolution to modify the name of its campaign against homophobia to include the trans reality. The campaign now bears the name of The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.
Fondation Émergence’s initiative to include trans realities in the May 17 campaign began in 2013, with the appointment to the Board of Directors of Ms. Monica Bastien, president of Aide aux trans du Québec (ATQ). At the request of Ms. Martine Roy, the president of Fondation Émergence, the organisation also convened representatives of twelve groups working with trans people in order to choose the best solution to raise public awareness about trans realities. They unanimously confirmed the need for the inclusion of trans realities in the May 17 campaign and the addition of the word “transphobia” to the day’s title.
The following organisations were represented during the consultation: Aide aux trans du Québec (ATQ), Alter Héros, L'Astérisk, Center for Gender Advocacy, Conseil Québécois LGBT, Gender Creative Kids Canada, Groupe d'action Trans de l'UdM, Jeunesse Lambda, La Réclame, Montreal Youth Coalition Against Homophobia, Project 10 and Quebec Trans Health Action. “This change will have a concrete impact,” stated Fondation Émergence president Martine Roy. “We hope that it will be given prominence in the content of our coming campaigns. I am happy to be able to count on the support of several organisations working with trans people to help us represent their realities,” she added.
The role of Fondation Émergence, in the context of this annual event that it established in 2003, is to propose a theme and promote the appropriation of this day by LGBT communities and the different actors of civil society. With this change, Fondation Émergence joins the international LGBT movement, which promotes the inclusion of trans realities in the May 17 campaigns. The National Bank is the official partner of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia.
