Getting involved

Fondation Émergence promotes the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia and encourages organisations and individuals to highlight this event in their environment.

May 17th is a symbolic date for homosexual people. The World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders on May 17, 1990. In 2003, Fondation Émergence created the first national day against homophobia, which expanded to the international level in 2006. Finally, in 2014, Fondation Émergence added “transphobia” to the name of the day. Every year, the campaigns organized for this day help fight discrimination in our society.

Where does it come from?

From Quebec, Canada ! Fondation Émergence created in 2003 the first national day against homophobia. Since the Fondation Émergence organizes an awareness campaign every year. Other organizations have joined in and it is now celebrated in many countries.

Why May 17th ?

May 17th is a symbolic date for homosexual people. On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders.

How has it evolved ?

Since its creation in 2003, IDAHOT has seen several changes. It took an international dimension in 2006, and in 2014, Fondation Émergence added the T for transphobia to what was then IDAHO. Each year, we try to find a relevant and current issue in Quebec and the rest of the world. Over the years the condition of LGBTQ+ people evolves, so does IDAHOT.
