Love makes a family

What is same-sex parenting ?

A family is same-sex parented when a child has two parents of the same sex or when at least one of thetwo parents identifies him/herself as gay or lesbian.

Similar paths, different views

Jeremy and Linh have same-sex parents, but they feel the same joys and pains as children who grow up in heterosexual or single-parent families.

What makes their daily lives different from those of their friends is the way society views homosexuality, and, by association, their family. This can sometimes be overbearing and can make Jeremy and Linh afraid of speaking about their family despite their love for their parents.

Did you know ?

In Quebec, 2002 was the year that same-sex couples were given the same parental rights as heterosexual couples, regardless of whether filiation results from adoption or from a parental project using assisted procreation.

LGBT people in the rest of Canada, Spain, Denmark and the United Kingdom also have the same parental rights as heterosexual people

Have you ever witnessed offensive remarks about homoparental families?

2014 survey offensive remarks about homoparental families

Our survey conducted in Canada in 2014 reveals persistent myths about same-sex parenting :

  • One-third (33%) of Canadians surveyed said they agree that for a child to develop fully, he must have opposite-sex parents.

  • In addition, half (49%) of Canadians surveyed believe that every child needs a parenting model of both sexes.

  • Finally, 7% of Canadians surveyed say that any child growing up in a homoparental family will be homosexual.

  • Despite these myths, the majority (79%) of Canadians surveyed said they agree that two people of the same sex can be as good parents as two people of the opposite sex.

Recherche
